There may be many of us including myself that have old pensions from previous companies we worked for many, many years ago. We may have moved address, lost or misplaced the paperwork but can remember we had or think we may have had a pension with ABC company.
There are lots of reasons it’s a good thing to take the time to find your old pensions. I would say the best reason is it’s your money, you contributed to it and it belongs to you. Also from an administrative point of view knowing where all your pensions are could be good for forward planning.
Also to consider or think about consolidating older pensions into existing workplace pension or even a SIPP. This may be a positive if the fees are high in your old Defined Contribution pensions or there are inactivity fees as your are no longer actively contributing as a member so this can eat away at the value of your pots.
To begin with the best place to start is the find pension contact details on the UK GOV site:
https://www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details
Telephone: 0800 731 0193
From outside the UK: +44 (0)191 215 4491
*Please be careful to visit the official UK GOV site and not a copy cat or pension scam!
When you visit the find pension contact UK Gov website have to hand your employers name and once you provide that it will give you if successful the pension administrators name and full contact details for example The People’s Pension or Legal & General.
Then it’s just a case of calling their number armed with your National Insurance Number and providing the company name and some personal details like your Date Of Birth.
